Ubuntu's Hardy Heron Takes Virtualization Flight
Ubuntu's first 'Long Term Support (LTS' rev in almost 23 months was pushed out the door this week along with the promise that another LTS rev would follow every two years from now on out and in between there would be point releases first at the three-month mark and then every six month after that. Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth borrowed Intel's 'Tick Tock' metaphor to explain Ubuntu's plans. The only thing that would upset the planned schedule, he said, would be if other major distributions aligned their releases.

Sun told the wire service that it's making sure its Java programming language, tools and Java server are compatible with Heron.

Product Review: openSUSE 10.3
With Autoupdater, 1-Click Install, Easy Repository Management, Easy Software & System Administration, you can not go wrong with openSuSE 10.3. So does it mean it's perfect? No, still a lot has to be done in terms of Compiz-Fusion performance and stability. Sometimes my system slowed down with Compiz-Fusion running. Other times KDE threw a Sig Fault when Compiz-Fusion started. KDE4 needs to be fixed. It has promised quite a lot of features and hopefully it doesn't become a burden on stability. All in all, openSUSE 10.3 is highly recommended and is among the best distros released this year!

Linux Foundation's Top Engineer Goes To Work for Microsoft
Microsoft has tapped Tom Hanrahan to run its side of its interoperability efforts with Novell. The appointment comes seven months after Microsoft and Novell signed the now-famous pact that raised FOSS hackles because of the built-in patent claims. Interesting choice Hanrahan considering that since 2004 he's been director of engineering at Open Source Development Labs, now the Linux Foundation, the home Linus Torvalds and a hotbed of the Linux push against Microsoft. Before that he was senior program manager in charge of software development and testing at IBM's Linux Technology Center. He came to IBM with its acquisition of Sequent and NUMA.
Canonical CEO Lays Odds on Linux Suit
'I'm certain someone will sue somebody else about Linux on patent grounds, but it's less likely to be Microsoft (starting a trench war) and more likely to be a litigant who only holds IP and doesn't actually get involved in the business of software. It will be a small company, possibly just a holding company, that has a single patent or small portfolio, and goes after people selling Linux-based devices.' - Mark Shuttleworth, CEO of Canonical, Ubuntu's creator.
Intel & Ubuntu Collaborate on Silverthorn
Ubuntu, Dell's pick for some of its PCs and laptops, is going to try its hand in the mobile and embedded market next and is talking about riding on small handheld Internet-enabled tablets powered by energy-efficient Intel chips, the tiny Silverthorn that Intel has described as being a seventh the size of a conventional chip and requiring only a tenth of the power.
